Portion
To burn it off
Rendang is beef slow cooked for hours in coconut milk and spices until the sauce has almost all cooked away. It comes from West Sumatra and it's the dish Indonesians and Malaysians argue about at the dinner table.
The rendang alone is 360 kcal, with 30 g of protein and 24 g of fat. Add a portion of rice and it's 560, with 50 g of carbs.
The fat comes from the coconut milk and the beef. It's rich, so a portion goes further than it looks.
Tips
- 1Fill half the plate with greens or the veg sides, it goes well against something that rich.
- 2Take a smaller scoop of rice, rendang has plenty of flavour to carry it.
- 3At a nasi padang counter, pick one rich dish and a couple of veg ones.
Where it comes from
Rendang comes from the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra, who call it randang, from marandang, to cook coconut milk slowly until dry. Nobody knows exactly when it began, as old written records are scarce. One theory says travelling Minangkabau traders needed food that kept for weeks, and spices from Indian and Arab settlers shaped the flavour. A CNN poll in 2011 named it the world's most delicious food.

Questions
How many calories in rendang without rice?
About 360 kcal for a portion of the beef and its sauce.
Is rendang high in protein?
Yes. A portion has about 30 g, and 34 g with the rice.
Why is rendang so rich?
It's cooked down in coconut milk, which brings most of the 24 g of fat.
Is chicken rendang lower than beef rendang?
Usually a little, as chicken is leaner than the beef cuts used. The coconut milk is the same, so it's still a rich dish.
Does cooking rendang longer add calories?
No, the long cooking only drives off water. The pot holds the same calories in less sauce, so a spoon of dry rendang is richer than a spoon of wet.
