To burn it off

Mie goreng is Indonesian fried noodles with sweet soy sauce, garlic, veg and usually chicken or an egg. In the UK it's also the instant pack that lives in every student kitchen.
A warung plate is 550 kcal, with 15 g of protein, 70 g of carbs and 22 g of fat. A pack of instant mi goreng is 380, with 52 g of carbs and 16 g of fat, because the noodles are fried before they're dried.
Put a fried egg on the instant one, as most people do, and it lands somewhere near the restaurant plate.
Tips
- 1Add a big handful of veg to instant noodles, it fills you up for very little.
- 2Use half the seasoning oil sachet, the flavour mostly comes from the soy and the powder.
- 3Ask for extra chicken and veg at a warung instead of a second plate.
Where it comes from
Mie goreng grew out of the fried noodles that Chinese immigrants brought to Indonesia, much like chow mein. Goreng is simply Indonesian for fried. Local cooks made it their own with sweet soy sauce, sambal and fried shallots, and swapped pork for chicken or prawns. The famous instant Indomie Mi Goreng flavour was created by Nunuk Nuraini and is now sold around the world.
