To burn it off
Quinoa is a seed you cook like a grain. A cup is 222 kcal, with 39 g of carbs and 8 g of protein.
It's a bit lower than a plate of rice and has more protein, but it's not a miracle. It's a side that does its job.
It tastes of very little on its own, which is why it ends up in salads and bowls with a dressing. Count the dressing too.

Tips
- 1Cook it in stock instead of water, so you need less dressing.
- 2Mix it with roast veg for a bigger bowl.
- 3Make a batch on Sunday for lunches all week.
Where it comes from
Quinoa comes from the Andes, where it was probably domesticated several times, some 3,000 to 5,000 years ago. Together with corn and potatoes it was a staple for the Inca, Aymara and Quechua peoples. The Spanish colonists pushed it aside, possibly because of its religious importance to Indigenous people, and it only became popular worldwide in recent decades.
