Chickpeas are mostly carbs with a good amount of protein and fibre, and only a little fat. They're the base of hummus, falafel and half the curries on a takeaway menu.

A 150 g portion is 246 kcal with 13 g of protein, which is roughly half a standard tin once drained.

Roasted chickpeas as a snack are the same beans with oil on, so they go up a bit. In a chana masala it's the sauce that adds the most.

Tips

  1. 1Throw half a tin into a salad to make it a meal that lasts till dinner.
  2. 2Roast them with spices and a light spray of oil instead of a pour.
  3. 3Bulk out a curry with chickpeas and go lighter on the rice.

Where it comes from

Chickpeas were domesticated roughly 10,000 years ago in what is now southeastern Turkey, the small area where their wild ancestor, Cicer reticulatum, still grows today. They were part of the first wave of farming in the Fertile Crescent, together with wheat, barley, lentils and peas, and spread from there east to India and west around the Mediterranean.
