Portion
To burn it off

Tempeh is a cake of whole soya beans, fermented until they bind together. It's from Java, and in Indonesia it's on almost every plate.
A fried portion is about 260 kcal, with 19 g of protein, 10 g of carbs and 16 g of fat. Part of the fat is the oil it was fried in.
It's firmer and nuttier than tofu and holds a lot of protein. In the UK you'll find it in the chiller near the tofu.

Tips
- 1Bake or air fry it instead of deep frying.
- 2Marinate it in soy, garlic and chilli so it doesn't need much oil.
- 3Use it in place of mince in a stir fry or chilli.
Where it comes from
Tempeh comes from Java, and it is one of the few traditional soy foods that did not start in China or Japan. The oldest written mention is in the Serat Centhini, a Javanese work written in the early 1800s but set in the early 1600s, so tempeh may be at least that old. The word tempe itself seems to come from Central Java.

Questions
Is tempeh high in protein?
Yes, about 19 g a portion, which is up there with a lot of meat.
Is tempeh lower than tofu?
Usually a bit higher, because it's denser. You also get more protein per bite.
How many calories in two portions?
About 520 kcal for two fried portions.
Do I weigh tempeh before or after cooking?
Weigh it from the pack. Raw tempeh is about 190 kcal per 100 g, then add the oil you fry it in, or log it as this fried portion.
What is tempe mendoan?
Thin slices of tempeh dipped in a seasoned batter with spring onion and fried only briefly, so they stay soft. The batter adds to it, so it counts a bit higher than plain fried tempeh of the same weight.
