A portion of marshmallows has about 100 kcal, nearly all of it from sugar.
Portion
To burn it off

Marshmallows are sugar whipped up with gelatine, which is why they're so light. A portion has 24 g of carbs, 1 g of protein and no fat.
A few on top of a hot chocolate or toasted round a campfire is a fun 100 kcal. The bag in front of the telly is a bigger number.
Mini marshmallows count by weight, so a big sprinkle is roughly the same as a few big ones.
Tips
- 1Toast a couple slowly on a fire, they last longer than eating them from the bag.
- 2Use minis on a hot chocolate, a few go a long way.
- 3Put a portion in a bowl and the bag back in the cupboard.
Where it comes from
The name comes from a real plant, the marsh mallow, whose sticky root was used as medicine by ancient Greek doctors. The sweet itself was invented in France in the mid 1800s, a cross between a throat lozenge and a bonbon, made by beating the root juice with egg and sugar into a foam. Later the root was replaced by gelatine, which was quicker to work with and gave marshmallows their soft, springy texture.
