How many calories in a baguette
Half a baguette has about 330 kcal, a small piece about 80.
Portion
To burn it off

A baguette is flour, water, salt and yeast, so it's almost all carbs. Next to no fat until you add the butter or cheese.
Half a baguette is 330 kcal, with 68 g of carbs and 11 g of protein. A whole French stick is 660. A small piece, the kind you tear off with soup, is 80.
The filling is what changes it. A baguette from the supermarket deli with cheese and mayo is a lot more than the bread on its own.
Tips
- 1Tear off a piece for your soup instead of cutting a big chunk.
- 2Fill it with ham, salad and mustard instead of lots of mayo.
- 3Share a whole one at a picnic, it goes further than you think.
Where it comes from
Nobody knows who invented the baguette. Long loaves were sold in France well before it, and in 1839 the Austrian baker August Zang brought steam ovens to Paris, which help give the crisp crust. The word baguette, little stick, was only used for this bread from 1920. The tale that Napoleon wanted loaves that fit in soldiers' pockets is a legend with no evidence behind it.
