How many calories in a pastel de nata
A pastel de nata has 220 kcal, with 3 g of protein.
Portion
To burn it off

A pastel de nata is a little tart of flaky pastry filled with egg custard, baked so hot the top scorches in spots. In Lisbon you have it standing at the counter with a bica, and here you'll find them at Portuguese cafés, Nando's and most supermarket bakeries.
One is 220 kcal. They're small, so two is the usual order, and that's 440.
The pastry is layered with butter and the custard is egg yolk, sugar and cream. That's where the number comes from, and also why they're so good.
Tips
- 1Have one, properly warm, instead of two from a box.
- 2Pair it with an espresso rather than a big milky coffee.
- 3Share the box with someone.
Where it comes from
The recipe comes from the monks of the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, Lisbon. Convents used egg whites to starch their clothes, so the leftover yolks went into sweets. When the monastery closed in 1834, the recipe was sold to the sugar refinery next door, whose owners opened the Fábrica de Pastéis de Belém in 1837. It still bakes them from that recipe, which is kept in a secret room.
