Portion
To burn it off

What the world calls a Danish, the Danes call wienerbrød, Viennese bread. It's laminated dough full of butter, with custard, jam or marzipan inside.
A bakery one is 380 kcal. The kanelsnegl, the cinnamon snail, is 420, because of the extra sugar and butter rolled into it.
In Denmark it's a weekend morning thing, from the bakery round the corner. That's the right way to have one.
Tips
- 1Cut it in half and share it with whoever's having coffee with you.
- 2Make it the weekend treat rather than the weekday breakfast.
Where it comes from
In 1850 Danish bakery workers went on strike, and the owners hired bakers from abroad, several of them Austrian. They brought the Viennese way of folding butter into dough in thin layers. Danish bakers kept it, added more egg and fat, and called the result wienerbrød, Viennese bread. Danish immigrants later took it to the United States around 1915, which is why the rest of the world calls it a Danish.
