You will most likely meet one in Prague's Old Town, at a Budapest Christmas market or at a street food stall in Vienna or Berlin: sweet yeast dough wound round a spit, rolled in sugar and turned over heat until the outside caramelises. Hungarians call it kürtőskalács, Czechs and Slovaks trdelník.

A whole plain one, about 200 g, is 700 kcal. That is 120 g of carbs, 18 g of fat and 14 g of protein, close to a full meal in a paper sleeve. Half, about 100 g, is 350.

The Prague version filled with soft serve, whipped cream or Nutella is another snack again. Two scoops of ice cream alone are 207 kcal, which takes a filled one past 900.

It pulls apart in a spiral, which makes it one of the easiest things there is to share. Two people, one chimney cake, 350 each.

Tips

  1. 1Buy one and share it, it unrolls in strips.
  2. 2Go for the plain sugar, cinnamon or walnut coating rather than a filled cone.
  3. 3Have it as the afternoon snack while you walk, not as dessert after a big lunch.

Questions

How many calories in half a chimney cake?

About 350 kcal for half, roughly 100 g.

How many calories in a trdelník with ice cream?

Roughly 900 kcal: 700 for the cake plus 207 for two scoops of ice cream. Whipped cream or chocolate sauce comes on top of that.

Is trdelník a traditional Czech food?

Not really. The spit cake comes from Hungary and Transylvania, and in Slovakia the town of Skalica has its own protected trdelník. The stalls all over central Prague arrived mostly with tourism.

Is a chimney cake the same as kürtőskalács?

Yes. Kürtőskalács is the Hungarian name, trdelník the Czech and Slovak one, and the recipe is close: yeast dough, sugar, a spit.

How much protein is in a chimney cake?

About 14 g in a whole one, so on its own it will not keep you full for long.
