Milk chocolate is sugar, cocoa butter and milk, so it's carbs and fat with a little protein. It's dense, which is the whole appeal.

A 100 g bar is 535 kcal, and four squares are 134. The big sharing bars are often 200 g or more, so check the wrapper.

The problem isn't a few squares, it's the bar that's open on the sofa. Four squares become eight before the episode ends.

Tips

  1. 1Break off four squares, put the rest away, then sit down.
  2. 2Keep it in the fridge, it melts slower and you eat it slower.
  3. 3Try dark chocolate for an evening, it's harder to wolf down.

Where it comes from

People drank cacao for thousands of years before anyone ate a bar, but milk chocolate is a Swiss idea. In Vevey, chocolate maker Daniel Peter first tried mixing in the milk powder of his friend Henri Nestlé, but it went mouldy. He switched to Nestlé's condensed milk, and in 1875 he finally got it right, and the new chocolate became a hit across Europe.

Questions

How many calories in four squares of chocolate?

About 134 kcal for 25 g.

Is dark chocolate lower than milk?

Not really. A 100 g bar of dark is 600 kcal against 535 for milk, but it's richer, so people eat less.

How many calories in half a bar?

Half a 100 g bar is about 268 kcal.

Does milk chocolate have caffeine in it?

A little. A 100 g bar has around 20 mg, while a mug of filter coffee has about 95, so it's a small amount.

Why does chocolate turn white?

That's called bloom. Fat or sugar rises to the surface after the bar gets warm or damp, and it's safe to eat, it just looks dull and feels a bit dry.

Did you know?

The Aztecs used cacao beans as money. One bean bought a tamale, and 100 beans bought a good turkey hen.
