How many calories in jam
A tablespoon of jam has about 50 kcal, almost all of it sugar.
Portion
To burn it off

Jam is fruit boiled with sugar until it sets. A tablespoon has 13 g of carbs, no fat and no protein.
On toast, one tablespoon is a fair spread. On a cream tea scone, it's usually a lot more, cream first or jam first.
Reduced sugar jams exist and taste close to the real thing. The fruitier, the less sugar it needs.
Tips
- 1Use a teaspoon to spread it, not a tablespoon.
- 2Try mashed raspberries or strawberries on toast in summer, they taste like jam.
- 3Stir a teaspoon into plain yoghurt instead of buying fruit yoghurt.
Where it comes from
The oldest known recipe is in the Roman cookbook of Apicius, from about the 4th century: quince mashed in honey. Jam as we know it needed sugar, which was grown in Persia by the 6th century, and the Crusades brought sugary fruit preserves to medieval Europe, where they were a luxury for the rich. Where the English word jam comes from is still not known.
