One brownie is 280 kcal, with 36 g of carbs, 14 g of fat and 3 g of protein. It's small for what it is, because it's dense.

That's less than a big muffin, which surprises people. A brownie looks rich because it is, but it's also a lot smaller.

Add a scoop of ice cream or a pour of cream and it becomes a proper pudding. The brownie on its own is the smaller part of that bowl.

Tips

  1. 1Cut the tray into smaller squares when you bake them yourself.
  2. 2Share one with whoever is having coffee with you.
  3. 3Skip the cream on top when it's already warm and gooey.

Where it comes from

The story goes that the brownie was made at Chicago's Palmer House hotel in 1893, when Bertha Palmer asked for a small cake that would fit in lunch boxes at the World's Fair. Historians have found no record from that year, though. Fannie Farmer's 1896 brownies were molasses cakes with no chocolate at all, and chocolate brownie recipes only start appearing in American cookbooks around 1899 to 1904.

Questions

How many calories in two brownies?

Two come to 560 kcal.

Is a brownie higher than a muffin?

A brownie is 280 kcal and a big bakery muffin is 420, so the brownie is lower.

Do blondies have fewer calories?

Not really. They swap the chocolate for more sugar and butter, so they end up close.

Do black bean brownies have fewer calories?

Usually fewer, since the beans stand in for most of the flour and some of the butter. The chocolate and sugar stay, so they're lighter rather than light.

Are fudgy brownies higher than cakey ones?

A little. Fudgy brownies use more butter and chocolate and less flour, so they're richer. The size of the square changes it more than the recipe does.
