How many calories in paella
A plate of paella has about 500 kcal, with 25 g of protein from the chicken and seafood.
Portion
To burn it off

Paella is rice cooked in stock and olive oil with chicken, seafood or both. The rice is the 60 g of carbs, the oil most of the fat.
500 kcal is a full meal. On a Spanish holiday it often follows bread, aioli and a jug of sangria, and those add up as much as the paella.
Seafood paella tends to be a bit lighter than one heavy with chorizo. Either way, it's made to share from the pan.
Tips
- 1Go for seafood or vegetable paella if you want it lighter.
- 2Easy on the bread and aioli while you wait for the pan.
- 3Have a big salad alongside and a slightly smaller plate.
Where it comes from
Paella comes from the rice fields around the Albufera lagoon near Valencia, where farm workers cooked it for lunch over a fire in the mid 19th century. Early versions used water vole, eel and butter beans, and later rabbit, chicken, duck and sometimes snails. Paella is simply the Valencian word for a pan, from the Latin patella.
