Portion
To burn it off

Smørrebrød is a slice of dark rye bread, buttered and piled high with toppings: herring, egg and prawns, roast beef with remoulade, liver pâté. It's eaten with a knife and fork.
One is about 300 kcal, though the toppings vary a lot. A Danish lunch is usually three, so 900.
Rye bread is dense and full of fibre, so it fills you up properly. The butter and the mayo toppings are where the number grows.
Tips
- 1Have two and fill up on a pickled side salad.
- 2Pick toppings like herring, egg or smoked fish over the ones swimming in remoulade.
Where it comes from
The name simply means butter and bread. It probably began as a farm lunch, last night's leftovers piled on a slice of rye. Copenhagen dressed it up, and in the 1930s the restaurant Oskar Davidsen became famous at home and abroad for the world's longest open sandwich menu: 1.4 metres long, with about 170 kinds, including one called the vet's midnight snack.
