Portion
To burn it off

Pelmeni are small dumplings of thin dough wrapped round minced pork and beef, boiled and eaten straight from the pot. Every Russian freezer has a bag of them, and every student has lived on them for a term.
A normal plate is 550 kcal. Add a big spoon of smetana, the thick sour cream that goes on everything, and it's 680.
The dough is most of the carbs and the meat is most of the fat. Butter melted over the top is the bit people forget to count.
Tips
Where it comes from
Pelmeni come from the Urals and Siberia. The name was borrowed from the Komi and Udmurt languages, where it means ear bread, after the dumpling's folded, ear like shape. Researchers think these peoples were already making them in the Middle Ages, though some argue the idea came from Chinese dumplings via the Mongols. Russian cookbooks printed a recipe for Siberian pelmeni in the 1840s.
