Where it comes from
Halušky go back to the shepherds of the Slovak mountains, who needed a filling meal they could cook over a fire. The tangy sheep's cheese, bryndza, came with Wallachian herders who settled in the Carpathians between the 14th and 17th centuries. In 1787 Ján Vagač opened a bryndza creamery in Detva and packed the cheese in barrels, so it could travel as far as Vienna and Budapest.
