Portion
To burn it off

Garlic bread is bread with garlic butter, baked until it's crispy outside and soft in the middle. Pizza places and Italian restaurants put it at the start of every order.
Two slices are about 300 kcal, with 6 g of protein, 35 g of carbs and 15 g of fat. Add cheese and it goes up again.
On its own it's a snack. Before a pizza it's a whole extra course nobody counts.
Tips
- 1Share one portion between the whole table.
- 2Skip the cheesy version if you're getting a pizza anyway.
- 3Make it at home with olive oil, garlic and herbs, and less of it.
Where it comes from
Garlic bread as you know it is Italian American. Its ancestor is bruschetta, Italian toast rubbed with garlic and olive oil, but olive oil was hard to find in the US in the early 1900s, so immigrants probably swapped in butter. By the 1950s it was on restaurant menus across America, and in the 1970s Cole's in Muskegon, Michigan started selling it frozen.
