How many calories in French toast
Two slices of French toast have about 360 kcal, before any toppings.
Portion
To burn it off

French toast, or eggy bread if you grew up with it, is bread dipped in egg and milk and fried in butter. It's breakfast and pudding at the same time.
Two slices are 360 kcal, with 12 g of protein, 40 g of carbs and 16 g of fat. That's 180 a slice.
The toppings are where it climbs. Maple syrup, a dusting of sugar, bacon or a dollop of cream all go on top of that number.
Tips
- 1Top it with berries and a spoon of Greek yoghurt instead of cream.
- 2Use a non stick pan so you need less butter.
- 3Have one slice with a side of fruit instead of two.
Where it comes from
French toast is older than France. A Roman cookbook credited to Apicius, from around the 4th century, already soaked white bread in milk and beaten egg, fried it in oil and covered it in honey. In France it is pain perdu, lost bread, probably because it uses up stale slices. The English name French toast is first recorded in 1660, and nobody is sure why it was called French.
