How many calories in a burek
A portion of meat burek has 700 kcal, with 40 g of fat.
Portion
To burn it off

Burek is layers of thin filo pastry, brushed with oil and filled with minced meat or soft cheese. It's flaky because of all that fat between the layers.
A bakery portion with meat is 700 kcal, the cheese one is 650. It's a full meal in a paper bag.
Across the Balkans it's breakfast, often with a glass of yoghurt. That's the move, because it's filling stuff.
Tips
- 1Ask for a smaller piece, most bakeries cut it to order.
- 2Have it with plain yoghurt, so it carries you all morning.
Where it comes from
Burek comes from the Turkish börek, a family of filled and layered pastries that Turkic peoples brought west from Central Asia. It became a delicacy in the Ottoman imperial kitchens, and five centuries of Ottoman rule spread it across the Balkans, where every country now has its own. The name probably goes back to an old Turkic word, though linguists still argue about it.

Tradition, and it works: the cool, tangy yoghurt cuts through the rich pastry.
Why is only the meat one called burek in Bosnia?
In Bosnia burek means the meat pie. With cheese it's sirnica, with spinach zeljanica and with potato krompiruša, and together they're simply pita.
