How many calories in a zapiekanka
A zapiekanka has 550 kcal, with 20 g of protein.
Portion
To burn it off
A zapiekanka is half a baguette, cut lengthways, topped with fried mushrooms and cheese, toasted, then finished with a stripe of ketchup. It's Polish street food, the thing you queue for at a hatch in Kraków's Kazimierz at midnight.
A whole one is 550 kcal. Half is 275, and they're long enough to share.
The bread is most of it and the cheese is most of the fat. Extra toppings like ham, garlic sauce or fried onions add up quickly.
Tips
- 1Split one with a friend. It's a lot of bread.
- 2Skip the extra garlic sauce and keep the ketchup.
- 3Go for the plain mushroom and cheese one rather than the one with everything.
Where it comes from
Zapiekanka was born in 1970s communist Poland. Edward Gierek's government allowed small private food stalls, and Poland had started baking French style baguettes under a licence he bought. Half a baguette with mushrooms and cheese was cheap, quick and filling in lean years, and the stalls sold it everywhere. The name simply means something baked.
