A black americano coffee in a clear glass cup

An americano is espresso topped up with hot water. Black coffee is about 1 kcal per 100 ml, so a black cup is 3 kcal.

It's what you add that counts. A splash of milk is a few calories more, a sugar or a flavoured syrup a lot more.

Next to a latte at 150, it's the lightest coffee on the board, by a mile.

Tips

  1. 1Add a splash of milk rather than ordering a latte if you want it creamier.
  2. 2Cut down the sugar one spoon at a time, you stop missing it within a week or two.
  3. 3Order it a size smaller if you take it with milk and sugar.

Where it comes from

The story goes that American soldiers in Italy during the Second World War watered down espresso to taste like the drip coffee from home. It is a nice tale, but the Oxford English Dictionary traces café americano to Central American Spanish of the 1950s, a teasing name for weak coffee, first printed in English in a Jamaican paper in 1964. Italians took up the word later.
