A taco is a small tortilla with a filling, often beef, chicken or pork, plus salsa, cheese and maybe sour cream. The tortilla is the light part, the toppings decide the rest.
Three are 510 kcal, with 27 g of protein, 39 g of carbs and 27 g of fat. One is 170, which makes it easy to count as you go.
A taco kit at home with crunchy shells, grated cheese and soured cream lands in the same place. Street style ones with just meat, onion and coriander are often lighter.
Tips
- 1Pile on the salsa and lettuce, go easy on the cheese and soured cream.
- 2Have two tacos and a side of black beans instead of a fourth.
- 3Use chicken or fish instead of beef mince now and then.
Where it comes from
Corn tortillas are thousands of years old in Mexico, but the word taco is fairly new. Historian Jeffrey Pilcher thinks it comes from the 18th century silver mines, where a taco was a paper charge of gunpowder pushed into the rock. The first written mentions only turn up at the end of the 1800s, and one of the earliest kinds was tacos de minero, miner's tacos.
