Tips
- 1Go for baked over fried.
- 2Have one with a salad instead of three on their own.
- 3Pick a chicken or veg filling over beef and cheese.
Where it comes from
Its exact origin is unclear, but the empanada probably grew out of filled pastries from the Middle East that reached Spain after the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. The name comes from the Spanish empanar, to wrap in dough or bread. Spanish colonists then carried it to Latin America and the Philippines, where each country made its own.
