Kutia is cooked wheat berries with poppy seeds, honey, nuts and sometimes raisins. It is the first dish on the table on Orthodox Christmas Eve, on 6 January, in Ukraine and among Belarusian and Russian speakers, and Poles eat it at Wigilia too.

A bowl is about 300 kcal, with 8 g of protein, 50 g of carbs and 8 g of fat. The wheat gives the carbs, the poppy seeds and nuts the fat.

It is a meatless dish for a meatless evening, and it is sweet, so it works as a starter and a dessert at once.

Tips

  1. 1Go easy on the honey poured over the top. The raisins already sweeten it.
  2. 2A small bowl is plenty. It is dense and filling.
