Portion
To burn it off
Katsu curry is breaded, fried chicken with a mild, sweet Japanese curry sauce and a big pile of rice. It's one of the most ordered things on the Wagamama menu, and the meal deal shelves have their own version.
A plate is about 850 kcal, with 35 g of protein, 110 g of carbs and 30 g of fat. The breadcrumbs and frying make up a good part of it.
It's a proper hearty plate, a bit like a Sunday roast in calories. Fine for a big meal, not quite a light lunch.
Tips
- 1Ask for half rice and a side salad.
- 2Try a grilled chicken curry instead of the breaded katsu.
- 3Share a plate and add a side of edamame or greens.
Where it comes from
Ginza Swiss in Tokyo says katsu curry was born there in 1948, when baseball player Shigeru Chiba asked for his two favourite dishes on one plate, a cutlet and curry. The restaurant still calls it Chiba-san's curry. But Kawakin in Asakusa claims 1918 and Oroji in Shinjuku 1921, and even Ginza Swiss says it cannot be sure it came first.

Questions
Why is katsu curry so high?
The chicken is breaded and fried, the sauce is rich and the rice portion is big. Together that's 850.
Is the sauce high in calories?
It's part of it, but the fried coating and the rice are the bigger pieces.
How many calories in half a plate?
About 425 kcal.
How many calories in katsu curry without the rice?
Roughly 450 to 500 kcal. A big portion of rice is about 350 to 400 on its own, so the katsu and sauce make up the rest.
Is katsu curry gluten free?
Usually not. The breadcrumbs are wheat, and most Japanese curry sauce is thickened with wheat flour.
