Suya is thin beef on skewers, rubbed with yaji, a spice of ground peanuts, chilli, ginger and more, and grilled over an open fire. It comes from the Hausa north of Nigeria and is now sold on roadsides all over the country at night. It's wrapped in paper with sliced raw onion, tomato and extra yaji.

A portion is 230 kcal, with 25 g of protein, 12 g of fat and 5 g of carbs. It's mostly lean meat, and the peanut spice adds a bit of the fat.

That makes it one of the better snacks for protein. The trouble is that a portion rarely feels like enough.

Tips

  1. 1Eat the onion and tomato it comes with, they fill you up.
  2. 2Ask for lean beef over the fatty pieces.
  3. 3Have it as dinner with a salad instead of a snack after dinner.
