Harira is a Moroccan soup of tomatoes, lentils and chickpeas, often with a little lamb or beef, lots of coriander and parsley, and a spoon of flour stirred in to make it silky. In Ramadan it's the bowl that breaks the fast, next to dates and something sweet.

A bowl is 250 kcal, with 35 g of carbs, 14 g of protein and 6 g of fat. The lentils and chickpeas do most of the work, so it fills you up for what it costs.

The extras are where it climbs. Dates, bread and the honey soaked chebakia on the side each count on top of the bowl.

Tips

  1. 1Have the bowl first and give it a few minutes before the rest of the table.
  2. 2Squeeze lemon over it, it adds taste and nothing else.
  3. 3Pick dates or chebakia with it, not a pile of both.
